Walkers Troubles Continue As Phils Clinch Postponed Again

Walker's troubles continue: Phils' clinch postponed again

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves

Phillies magic number stays at one after a 5-2 loss to the Braves at Truist Park

After having the opportunity to clinch a playoff berth on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Phillies failed to do so again on Thursday afternoon. They lost to the Atlanta Braves, 5-2, and now are forced to wait at least another day to secure a spot in the postseason.

The Phillies have not clinched a playoff berth since 2011, the last time they won a division title. They lost in the first round of the playoffs that year and have not been back to the playoffs since. They are currently in first place in the National League East, but their lead has been cut to just one game over the Braves.

Kyle Gibson pitched 4.2 innings, but left with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth. He allowed five runs on seven hits. Andrew Bellatti relieved Gibson and got out of the jam, but the damage had already been done. The Phillies bullpen pitched the final 4.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters.

The Phillies offense was held in check by Braves starter Spencer Strider. Strider pitched 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out eight. The Phillies did not have a hit until the fourth inning, and they did not score until the fifth. They had just five hits in the game.

The Phillies will have another chance to clinch a playoff berth on Friday night when they face the Braves again at Truist Park. Bryce Harper is expected to make his return to the lineup after missing the last two games with a sore back. The Phillies will need a win and a loss by the Milwaukee Brewers to clinch a playoff berth.
