Fortuna Düsseldorf made a commanding start to their Bundesliga 2 relegation playoff against VfL Bochum on Saturday, taking a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion.
The visitors struck early, with Dawid Kownacki finding the net in the 10th minute. Düsseldorf doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark through Kristoffer Peterson before Emmanuel Iyoha added a third on the stroke of halftime.
Bochum, who finished third in the 2. Bundesliga regular season, found themselves on the back foot throughout the first half. The hosts managed just three shots on target compared to Düsseldorf's seven, and they were unable to find a way back into the game before the break.
The result leaves Düsseldorf in a strong position heading into the second leg at their own Merkur Spiel-Arena next week. A draw or a win will be enough to secure their return to the Bundesliga, while Bochum will need to score at least four goals to overcome the deficit.
